Thoughtful hospitality, beautiful design, and a slower pace of life on California’s most iconic stretch of coastline.
As a wedding designer, I find inspiration everywhere, not just in flowers. Some of my favorite ideas come from beautiful hotels, thoughtful hospitality, architecture, gardens, and places that simply make you slow down and notice the details.
One place I find myself returning to again and again is Carmel-by-the-Sea and the surrounding Monterey Peninsula. Whether we’re escaping for a long weekend or simply looking to recharge, this stretch of California coastline always leaves me feeling inspired. Here are a few of my favorite ways to spend time in the area.
Stay
When choosing a place to stay and call home base for a relaxing weekend, I generally look to Pacific Grove. It’s quieter, full of historic Victorian charm, and only a short drive from downtown Carmel, making it an ideal home base for exploring the Monterey Peninsula.
One of the things I love most about Pacific Grove is the collection of charming bed and breakfasts, many of which have been beautifully restored and updated while still preserving their historic character. Slow mornings, ocean views, fresh coffee, and breakfast served on-site create the perfect atmosphere for unwinding.
We’ve personally stayed at the Gosby House Inn and have always loved its welcoming hospitality, thoughtful amenities, and cozy aesthetic. Other wonderful options include Seven Gables Inn and Green Gables Inn. Honestly, it’s difficult to go wrong, each offers its own unique charm and proximity to the coast.
Slow Mornings
One of my favorite rituals when visiting the area is taking advantage of the hotel provided bikes and heading out along the coastal bike trail.
The trail winds along the ocean toward Monterey and provides some of the most beautiful views on the peninsula. We usually make our way to Tidal Coffee for a morning coffee before the town begins to fill with visitors.
There is something special about experiencing the coastline early in the day. The air feels crisp, the streets are quiet, and everything moves at a slower pace. It’s a simple activity, but one that perfectly captures what I love most about this area.
Brunch at Pebble Beach

If there is one experience I recommend to nearly everyone visiting the area, it’s enjoying brunch—or really any meal: at The Lodge at Pebble Beach.
Of course, the food is wonderful, but what keeps me coming back is the overall experience. The hospitality is exceptional, the grounds are meticulously maintained, and the views overlooking the iconic golf course and Pacific Ocean are unforgettable.
As a designer, I find myself paying attention to the details: the landscaping, the way guests are welcomed, the balance of luxury and comfort, and the seamless experience created from start to finish. It’s a reminder that thoughtful design extends far beyond flowers.
Design Inspiration
One of my favorite things to do is simply drive through 17-Mile Drive and take it all in.
The historic estates, gated entrances, mature gardens, and incredible coastal architecture offer endless inspiration. I love seeing how different properties interact with the landscape and how design can feel both grand and completely at home in its surroundings.
Of course, no drive is complete without stopping to admire the famous cypress trees and dramatic ocean views that have become synonymous with the Monterey Peninsula.
For me, this drive is less about reaching a destination and more about observing beautiful details along the way.
Wellness & Slowing Down
The Monterey Peninsula has a way of encouraging you to slow down, which is one of the reasons I love it so much.
One of my favorite indulgences is booking a couples massage at the rooftop spa at Monterey Plaza Hotel & Spa. The experience begins long before the treatment itself. Relaxing in the rooftop hot tubs overlooking the ocean, listening to the waves, and enjoying the peaceful atmosphere feels like a reset button.
Life and business can move quickly, and carving out intentional time to rest and recharge is something I’ve come to value more and more.
Shopping in Carmel
No trip to Carmel feels complete without spending an afternoon wandering through town.
The boutiques, galleries, garden courtyards, and beautifully curated storefronts are part of what makes Carmel so special. Even if I’m not shopping for anything specific, I love exploring the streets and appreciating the thoughtful design of each space.
As someone who works in a creative field, I often find inspiration in the way colors, textures, displays, and environments are put together. Carmel is filled with those kinds of details.
Sunset & Dinner
To end the day, one of my favorite traditions is dinner at Mission Ranch.
The setting is quintessential Carmel: rolling green pastures, grazing sheep, and ocean views in the distance. It’s relaxed, timeless, and full of character.
After dinner, we often head to the beach to watch the sunset. There’s something about the combination of the ocean, the cool evening air, and the fading light that makes you want to linger just a little longer.
It’s the perfect way to close out a day on the peninsula.
Looking Ahead
Every time we visit Carmel, I leave feeling inspired. Whether it’s the architecture along 17-Mile Drive, the hospitality at Pebble Beach, a quiet morning bike ride along the coast, or simply slowing down enough to notice beautiful details, it’s a place that continually fuels my creativity.
And despite visiting often, there’s still plenty left on my list!
Next up is attending The Quail, one of the area’s most celebrated automotive gatherings. Between the craftsmanship, design, and incredible setting, it feels like exactly the kind of experience that makes Carmel so special.
Until then, I’ll happily keep returning for the ocean views, inspiring design, and slower pace that make this corner of California one of my favorite places to visit.
