One of my favorite trends in weddings right now is the growing emphasis on the entire guest experience.
Rather than focusing solely on the wedding day itself, couples are creating memorable moments throughout the entire weekend, and welcome parties have become the perfect place to do it.
This western inspired welcome party at Richards Ranch was a beautiful example of how thoughtful design and interactive experiences can set the tone for an unforgettable celebration.
Planned by CMG Events and beautifully captured by Stephanie Lynn Co, the evening blended elevated ranch aesthetics with playful guest experiences that encouraged everyone to relax and settle into the weekend ahead.
Guests were welcomed with activities throughout the property, including axe throwing, a custom hat branding station, and an ice cream cart that quickly became a crowd favorite. Every detail felt intentional, creating opportunities for guests to connect, explore, and participate rather than simply attend.

From a design perspective, I loved the balance that was achieved throughout the event. The warm wood interiors of Richards Ranch provided the perfect backdrop for layered textures, rich color, and thoughtfully curated details. Bandana inspired linens added a subtle western influence while maintaining an elevated feel, and the floral designs embraced movement and texture through the use of grasses, seed heads, and unique blooms.
One of the biggest challenges when designing themed events is avoiding the feeling of being overly literal. This celebration struck that balance beautifully. It felt authentic to the setting without relying on obvious western clichés.

As guests gathered around long communal tables beneath the warm glow of café lights, the atmosphere felt welcoming, relaxed, and genuinely memorable. It was the kind of event that reminded me that great design isn’t just about how a space looks, it’s about how people experience it.
And judging by the laughter around the axe throwing lanes, the custom-branded hats leaving with guests, and the line at the ice cream cart, I’d say this welcome party accomplished exactly that.
